see all reviewsBlack belt instructor: LOTS of studentd(didnt bother counting). The professor showed me how to sweep my enemy when I have a lasso on one side, and spider guard at the other side by releasing the lasso and hooking the ankle and drop my enemy to the other side and then slide his leg down to my armpit and do an ankle lock, then push him to get up. If he defends it by back stepping, I swing my leg up into a triangle while he is busy backstepping. If my enemy is much bigger than me, I may have trouble locking the triangle. Instead, I lock into a diamond shape over his shoulders and then submit him with an armbar instead. Afterwards, we sparred. Because I am a 0 degree white belt, I was unable to defend myself when rolling with the Professor. His arm bar attack came out of nowhere. It was so swift that the moment I started defending, it was already too late. The armbar was so strong that I tapped immediately to avoid permanent damage to my elbow. I pray that as I practice, I will improve :(

This is rare because most BJJ classes do not take into account striking. He then showed me how to take down my enemy with a body lock, and mount my enemy, and submit my enemy with an Americano, and when he defends it, submit him with an armbar instead. Because I am a 0 degree white belt, I have trouble transitioning from the Americano into the armbar seamlessly. I pray that as I practice, I will improve ;)

see all reviews2 degree black belt instructor: tons of students(didnt count). We started off with a game to train our reaction. Two people try to grab a block before the other person does, after the Professor gives instruction to. His instructions are mixed with other instructions to make the game more challenging. Then the real class started: the professor taught me how to sweep my enemy from a lasso position by hooking my enemy’s ankle after he drops down to combat base and then pull his arm and kick his ankles. He also showed me variations where my enemy’s leg is too far from me, then I will use my lasso leg to sweep him, instead of the other leg, and land right into an armbar submission. Finally he showed me how to sweep my enemy by going into inversion and then submitting him with an Oma Plateau. We ended with regular rolls. Because I am a 0 degree white belt, everyone passed my guard almost instantaneously lol. I pray that as I practice, i will improve :(

This is important because my enemy will not be standing still when attacking me. No matter how good my striking is, stationary training can only get me so far. see all reviewsBrazilian? Instructor: Dude was wearing a brazil t-shirt so I assume that is where he was from; 3 students but the big dude was late, so we had a semi-private class for almost half an hour. The professor asked me to do 50 jumping jets, 50 burpees, and 50 push ups as warm up. The teenager did not do them. I reckon it was because he had done the youth class right before this one. I then learned how to pass by enemy’s guard using the Tory Round Doe pass, then go on knee-on-belly. As my enemy tries to push my knee away, i grab his arm and defeat him with an arm bar or key moo ra. Because I am a beginner, I had trouble keeping my balance in the movements. We ended the class with 100 sit ups and one minute plank. Normally I can do 30 secs only, but today there were people doing Muay Thai sparring, which distracted me so I forgot about how hard the plank was, so I wnded up doing the full 60 seconds lol. I pray that as I practice, I will improve ;)

By chance, I ended up at Stephen's gym, and after just two classes, I grasped a lot and felt a significant difference. I'm really happy! It turns out that it's not entirely about talent; it's about the coach.

see all reviewsHKer instructor: the thailand martial arts surprised me with how complicated they are. There are muay thai dojos everywhere. The way most masters teach muay thai is exactly the same as kickboxing. I was unable to see what is the difference between muay thai and kickboxing. However, this Master shows us the traditional thai martial arts which is significantly more in depth than kickboxong. Krabi Krabong looks like FMA’s kalis/arnis/escrima at first glance. However, when look more in detail, they alsp have quite a lot of differences.

see all reviewsOld instructor: 9 students. The Master taught me how to use a sideslash, with stepping and pivotting, to defeat my enemy coming from the side. He also showed a technique where we counter punch against a punch, then latch him down as I kick him. We then did cross punching and variations of it. We ended with Chi Sour practice. While practicing with the Master, he taught me how to pivot to expose a crack in my enemy’s defence, then pivot back to attack my enemy through the opening. Because I am a beginner, I cannot do the Tai Gong and Seng skills properly, so the release down was unattainable. I pray that as I practice, I will improve :(

see all reviewsFriendly instructor. Maybe a bit too friendly? I felt like the rest times were really long and not just because he was correcting form but because he and the other two girls (who seemed to be regulars) started conversing. But to be fair the class went on for an extra 30 mins as well (on the assumption it was only supposed to be an hour). I would’ve like it more if he corrected during the time you were doing it rather than the breaks. The following has nothing to do with the rating a chose but just something I needed to mention, I’m pretty good at conversational canto but really struggled to understand technical terms and what I can only assume were muscle names and things - so it was a bit hard to follow his corrections - has nothing to do with how I rated since I’m sure many would like the extra tidbits of info but it would have been easier for me if he simpled it down to “hands x width apart” “legs wider” “squeeze your core” and where I should be feeling it rather than trying to understand what he was talking about how because it’s a cable and something you can pull down more instead of shifting your body back (?) honestly I didn’t understand all that much. Space was nice and clean :$ felt inviting.
